Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba recently hit New Jersey Congresswoman LaMonica McIver with criminal charges. Congresswoman McIver was reportedly leading a legal oversight tour of a controversial ICE detention center. As The Shade Room previously reported, the event made headlines after Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested during the tour.
Now, Congresswoman McIver has reportedly been charged with assaulting a police officer. Additionally, she’s been charged with impeding and interfering with law enforcement. But what really went down during the ICE detention center tour?
The Shade Room’s correspondent A.B. Burns-Tucker is sharing answers on ‘TSR Newz.’
According to Burns-Tucker, Representative McIver and three of her colleagues were at the Delaney Facility in Newark, New Jersey, on May 9. The tour was reportedly conducted because the congresspeople believed the facility’s paperwork and permits were improper. And therefore did not permit the operation of the facility. Per the host, the Delaney Hall Detention Facility is a “privatized ICE detention center.” Additionally, she also explained that it is owned by The Geo Group, a “private prison company.”
In addition, the facility not having proper paperwork, there have also been rumors about those detained in the facility not receiving due process, Burns-Tucker said.
According to Burns-Tucker, the group pulled up to the facility under justified terms to conduct their tour and observation of the location. Despite this, staffers reportedly did not allow the Congresspeople inside the location. At some point, the mayor arrived, ICE got involved, and ultimately, the mayor was arrested.
