Jon B is switching up his tune after throwing what many deemed shade at Chloe Bailey and Gunna for sampling his 90s classic, ‘They Don’t Know.’ The song has been sampled countless times over the years. But the singer couldn’t get behind Gunna and Chloe’s version, previously calling it “ratchet.” He’s now singing a different tune, saying he regrets his choice of words.
In a recent sit-down with Shirley Temple, host Shirley Ju got Jon B to spill more about his feelings regarding Chloe and Gunna’s 2022 track ‘You & Me,’ which sampled his iconic hit.
Jon admitted he may have been a little too shady with his initial reaction on the ‘Can We Talk’ podcast in August 2024, where he called their version “ratchet.” “I regretted how I spoke on it the first time,” he confessed, blaming being new to the podcast space for the slip-up. In other words, Jon wasn’t expecting his words to go viral the way that they did.
Jon then spoke on a clip of Chloe on The Breakfast Club that hit him hard. When asked about Jon’s calling her record “ratchet,” Chloe’s response made him feel like he dissed his own daughter. “It hurt because I was like, ‘Man, that could be my daughter right there,’” he shared, speaking as a dad with only daughters. Jon insisted he isn’t a hater and loves that his music continues to inspire other artists. But he wishes he’d kept it cute with his words.
The Roomies hopped in the comments on The Shade Room’s post with mixed thoughts about the situation. Some people felt he shouldn’t have felt the need to clear up his past remarks on the song, while others said they actually liked Gunna and Chloe Bailey’s version.

Jon B didn’t just call Chloe and Gunna’s collab “ratchet”… he added that he couldn’t even listen to it and wished they’d kept it in the vault. He also dropped some tea, claiming the two artists never cleared the sample with him before releasing it. “Actually, never got my rights to do that record either, so Gunna, we gotta holler about that,” he told the podcast host, hinting at some unfinished business. The host jumped in, “Y’all got some paperwork to sort out!”
Still, Jon tried to keep it classy, adding, “It’s all a compliment to what we did.” He knows being sampled is a nod to his 1997 classic, but that “ratchet” jab and the unclear sample had social media talking.
