On Saturday, May 17, the 150ft tall Mexican navy ship crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge during a goodwill tour around 8:30p.m. According to NBC New York the ship, the Cuauhtémoc had docked at the South Street Seaport earlier in the week, offering public tours before reportedly heading to Iceland. The collision snapped the ship’s three towering masts on impact and reportedly sent crew members dangling in the air.
Per ABC New York, the Mexican navy issued a statement updating the injury count to 22 crew members with 11 in critical condition and nine stable. After the collision occurred, CNN says the ship’s captain told investigators he lost steering after the rudder failed and the river’s current pulled the vessel into the bridge. “They had some sort of mechanical issue, they lost power so without being able to use the rudder, they could not steer,” investigators told CNN.
Early on Sunday morning, Mayor Adams returned to X, offering prayers for those injured in the crash and thanking first responders for their quick action. He also confirmed that the Brooklyn Bridge did not sustain any damage from the incident.
“We are praying for everyone on board and their families and are grateful to our first responders who quickly jumped into action, ensuring this accident wasn’t much worse. Following our preliminary inspection, we can confirm that the bridge sustained no damage and is now open to the public,” Mayor Adams wrote.
