Whew, chile! A night of partying took a horrific turn, and now one woman, Corbie Walpole, is facing serious consequences. Details came out in court this month, revealing what led to an act of violence between two friends.
Corbie Walpole, 24, has pleaded guilty to setting her friend, Jake Loader, 23, on fire during a house party in New South Wales last year. According to her testimony in Albury District Court, the two were partying hard, drinking and using cocaine, when Loader allegedly made a sexist remark. And, after hours of what she described as antagonistic behavior, Loader reportedly told her she should “stay in the kitchen making scones” if she couldn’t keep up with the guys. The comment, which apparently pushed Walpole over the edge, led to her setting him on fire, resulting in life-altering injuries.
After the comment triggered Walpole, she grabbed a gallon of gasoline from the garage, doused Loader, and waved a lighter at him. Witnesses said Loader dared her to go through with it—and she did. Moments later, he was set ablaze, suffering burns to 55% of his body. Furthermore, he was placed in a medically induced coma for eight days and spent 74 days in a Melbourne burn unit, undergoing 10 surgeries. Additionally, he even incurred damage to his sweat glands and can no longer be exposed to direct sunlight.
The court reports that Loader’s friends at the home heard him screaming. It’s also mentioned that they attempted to put out flames that were melting his shirt with a dog bed. He was then thrown into a pool. It is alleged that Walpole stood watching and said, “What the f*** have I done?… He told me to do it.”
In court, Walpole expressed deep remorse, saying she was struggling with drug and alcohol abuse following a breakup in 2022. She also claimed to have felt “overwhelmed” by Loader’s behavior that night. According to reports, Walpole pleaded guilty to one charge of burning or maiming by using corrosive fluid. She is expecting to be sentenced later this month.
“To this day, I feel horrible, remorseful, guilty for what I have done to Jake, not only Jake but his family, his loved ones…” Walpole told the court.
