What started as a routine food run turned deadly in Kissimmee, Florida. A late-night visit to a Checkers quickly spiraled out of control, leaving one man dead and another facing a life-changing charge. The shocking turn of events has left the community shaken, and questions are mounting about what led to the deadly confrontation.
According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal shooting took place last Wednesday night around 10:10 p.m. at the Checkers located on W Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway. Authorities say the incident began with a heated argument between a customer, Wesley Robertson, and a Checkers employee, 23-year-old Elijah Travis Mackey. What began as a verbal dispute over several missing mayonnaise packets escalated quickly and violently.
Surveillance video reviewed by investigators shows Mackey climbing out of the burger joint drive-thru window and approaching Robertson at the front of the restaurant. Witnesses reported a verbal exchange between the two men, during which Robertson allegedly made a derogatory remark to Mackey. That’s when, according to officials, Mackey pulled a small handgun from his waistband and shot Robertson in the chest.
The warrant reports that after being shot, Robertson collapsed and struck his head on the restaurant wall, later succumbing to his injuries. Mackey allegedly fled the scene on foot before he was found. He was then cuffed under the stairwell of the Celebration Suites hotel, according to reports. When police apprehended Mackey, he allegedly told police, “I have a gun on me” and asked, “Is dude OK?”
Robertson was rushed to Osceola Regional Medical Center, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead. Mackey was taken into custody shortly after and booked into the Osceola County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm.
Mackey made his first court appearance on Friday afternoon and was denied bond. As the investigation continues, this tragedy sparks conversations about conflict resolution, gun access, and the pressures faced by fast-food workers.
Kim Francis, a spokesperson for Checkers, shared the following statement:
“We are shocked and saddened by the incident that occurred last night at our restaurant in Kissimmee, Florida. The actions of this one employee do not reflect the values of the thousands of our hardworking employees across the country. We are working closely with the police in their investigation, and we are sending our thoughts and prayers to the guest’s family.”
