A game of ding-dong ditch at 3 a.m. led to the recent death of a high school senior and the arrest of a Virginia homeowner. Michael Bosworth Jr. and friends were pranking neighbors in Spotsylvania County when they tried the home of Tyler Chase Butler. The homeowner claims he believed someone was trying to break in. In response, he fired his gun, and the bullet fatally struck the 18-year-old while his friends were nearby, ready to film the TikTok prank. Now, Bulter faces multiple serious charges.
According to Fox 5 D.C., the incident happened early on Saturday, May 3. Surveillance footage from a neighbor’s home shows Michael Bosworth Jr. and two other teens at Tyler Chase Butler’s home. They allegedly weren’t just ringing the doorbell at around 3 a.m. The teens were reportedly banging, kicking, and slamming on Tyler’s garage door.
The details are still murky, but the 27-year-old reportedly told the cops he believed the teen was trying to break into the home, which he shares with his parents and brother in Fredericksburg. Amid the shooting, the local sheriff’s office got a call about a residential break-in. According to The Washington Post, the unnamed caller accused the teens of trying to kick down Tyler’s door.
Medical emergency responders took Michael Bosworth Jr. and another teen, grazed by a bullet, to the hospital. The graze victim survived, but Bosworth did not survive the torso injury. The high school senior, who was involved in lacrosse, football, and wrestling, was reportedly supposed to attend prom hours after his death.
Ultimately, the graze victim and the third teen, who did not have any injuries, told police they were not trying to rob Tyler Chase Butler’s house. Instead, they admitted to recording ding-dong-ditch pranks for TikTok. It’s unclear how many homes the teens pranked before hitting Tyler’s. The unharmed teen reportedly showed police a video of them playing ding-dong ditch on another property.
NBC Washington reports that Tyler Chase Butler is being held without bond at the Rappahannock Regional Jail as of this week. The 27-year-old is charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Though Virginia is a stand-your-ground state, it’s unclear whether it applies to this situation. That means a person is not required to try to escape before using force. However, it’s also unclear if Tyler was the registered owner of the weapon used in the fatal ding-dong ditch shooting.
Court documents cited by NBC describe Tyler as a single man. He is reportedly college-educated in computer science and earns his living from sports betting. Butler’s next court date in the case is on June 18.
Meanwhile, a detective in the case has reportedly filed a search warrant to search for ding-dong ditch related content on the iPhones of the two surviving teens, per The Washington Post.

BANGING on someone’s door playing “DING DONG DITCH” at 3 a.m. is NOT a good idea. Now the kids dead and the homeowner protecting his family is in jail charged with 2nd degree murder.

It is awful that a teenager died as a result of this and I wish it had ended differently. Also, the shooter was at his home when 3 grown-looking people kicked his door at 3 am in what many reports term an "attempted burglary" and the teenagers term a TikTok prank. The shooter is…
